ASHANILAYAM

At Pope Paul Mercy Home, we believe that care and compassion should last a lifetime. Our Home for Intellectually Disabled Persons Above 60 Years is a haven of love and dignity for elderly individuals who require specialized attention and support. Currently, the home provides residential care for 65 senior beneficiaries, many of whom are classified under severe and profound intellectual disabilities. Each resident receives personalized care, medical supervision, and emotional support in a warm, homely environment that prioritizes their comfort and well-being.

Trained caregivers and healthcare professionals ensure that every individual’s physical, emotional, and therapeutic needs are met with patience and empathy. Daily routines include recreational activities, light physiotherapy, and opportunities for social interaction, helping residents stay active and engaged. For many of our residents, Pope Paul Mercy Home is not just a place of care — it is truly their home, where they are loved, respected, and valued for who they are. Through our dedicated efforts, we strive to make their later years peaceful, purposeful, and filled with affection.

FACILITIES

Our Speech Therapy Unit plays a vital role in enhancing the communication abilities of children and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. We believe that the power to communicate is the foundation of learning, relationships, and independence.

The therapy process begins with a comprehensive assessment conducted by qualified speech-language pathologists. This assessment helps in accurately identifying whether the individual has a speech delay, speech or language disorder, or communication difference. It also determines the nature and severity of the difficulty, the appropriate therapeutic approach, and the recommended frequency of sessions.

Based on the assessment, personalized therapy plans are designed to develop speech clarity, language comprehension, expression, and social communication skills. Using evidence-based techniques, interactive tools, and family involvement, our therapists work patiently to help each person reach their fullest communicative potential.

Behaviour Therapy forms a vital part of our holistic approach to the growth and development of children with intellectual and developmental disabilities. We believe that every child can learn positive ways to express themselves and interact meaningfully with the world when guided with patience, understanding, and care.

Our trained behaviour therapists design individualized behaviour intervention plans tailored to each child’s needs. These plans aim to encourage positive behaviours such as social participation, focus, and self-control, while reducing challenging behaviours like aggression, self-injury, hyperactivity, and tantrums.

Through structured strategies, consistent reinforcement, and close collaboration with families, our therapists help children develop essential life skills, enhance communication, and gain confidence in daily activities. The focus is always on building independence, emotional balance, and healthy social relationships.

We believe that true education extends beyond academics — it encompasses every skill that helps a child live with confidence, dignity, and independence. Our Occupational Therapy Unit plays a crucial role in nurturing these abilities and guiding each child toward a more self-reliant and fulfilling life.

Our dedicated occupational therapists work with children who experience developmental delays, physical or intellectual disabilities, or sensory challenges. Through carefully structured and individualized interventions, they focus on improving fine motor skills, hand-eye coordination, sensory processing, cognitive abilities, and daily living skills such as dressing, eating, and personal hygiene.

Therapy sessions are creative, engaging, and deeply personalized — helping each child discover their strengths and overcome limitations at their own pace. By building essential life skills and promoting independence, our therapists empower students to navigate daily tasks with greater confidence, joy, and purpose.

We believe that every child is unique and learns in their own special way. Our Individualized Education Plan (IEP) is at the heart of our teaching process, ensuring that each student receives personalized support designed to meet their specific strengths, challenges, and learning goals.

Each IEP is thoughtfully crafted by a team of special educators, therapists, and parents, focusing on specific, measurable, and achievable goals that guide the child’s academic, social, and emotional development. These plans outline individualized teaching methods, learning materials, and therapeutic interventions to help every student reach their fullest potential.

For children capable of academic learning, special emphasis is placed on curriculum adaptation, continuous evaluation, and skill-based learning. Through this personalized approach, we ensure that every learner receives the care, encouragement, and resources needed to grow with confidence and success.

Our Physiotherapy Unit is dedicated to enhancing the physical well-being and independence of children with developmental, neuromuscular, skeletal, or congenital conditions. We recognize that movement is essential to every child’s growth, confidence, and sense of freedom — and our therapies are designed to help each child achieve their highest potential in mobility and daily functioning.

Our experienced physiotherapists work closely with children affected by developmental delays, cerebral palsy, muscular dystrophy, orthopedic conditions, and respiratory difficulties. Through carefully structured, individualized programs, they focus on improving balance, posture, coordination, muscle strength, and endurance.

Early intervention is a key component of our approach. By addressing challenges at the earliest stages, we help children build strong foundations for lifelong physical health and independence. Families are also guided and supported throughout the process, ensuring consistency and continuity in care.

we believe that physical education is vital to every child’s growth, development, and overall well-being. Our program is designed not only to strengthen the body but also to nurture discipline, confidence, and teamwork among our students.

We understand that children with disabilities may face unique challenges in participating in sports and games. To ensure that every child has the opportunity to benefit from physical activity, we offer Adapted Physical Education (APE) — a carefully modified program tailored to meet the specific needs and abilities of each student. This includes thoughtful adjustments in instructions, equipment, activities, and environments, creating an inclusive space where every child can experience success and joy in movement.

Beyond promoting physical fitness, our physical education sessions also foster social interaction, emotional well-being, and communication skills. Through guided play, teamwork, and encouragement, students learn the values of cooperation, perseverance, and self-confidence.

The National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS), is a national level board of education in India, controlled and managed by the Government of India. It was established by the Ministry of Human Resource Development of the Government of India in 1989. The NIOS board introduced the Open Basic Education program as an alternative educational program, equivalent to the Elementary Education Program of the formal education system. In this program, a student can take lesser subjects to suit their capacity and take longer time to finish any particular academic year.

we are committed to ensuring that every child receives the opportunity to learn, grow, and succeed according to their abilities. For students who demonstrate academic potential, we offer an Open School System through our collaboration with the National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS).

This program provides a flexible and inclusive educational pathway, allowing students to learn at their own pace while receiving individualized instruction and specialized support from our dedicated teachers. Through structured guidance, remedial teaching, and personalized coaching, our students are prepared to enroll in NIOS and successfully complete their examinations.

The Open School System empowers our learners to continue their academic journey with dignity and confidence, overcoming barriers that may exist in traditional education settings. At Pope Paul Mercy Home, we believe in nurturing not only knowledge but also self-belief and independence, ensuring that every student reaches their full academic and personal potential.
