Course Content
The Teacher Training Programme at Pope Paul Mercy Home Teachers Training Centre offers a credit-based, holistic curriculum designed to prepare trainee teachers for working with children at both primary and secondary school levels.
The curriculum includes core papers such as Education in Contemporary India, Human Development, and Psychology of Learning, similar to those in the B.Ed. (General Education) program. In addition to specialized training for teaching children with intellectual disabilities, the program also equips trainees to effectively support children with other disabilities, aligning with the goals of inclusive education.
This comprehensive course structure focuses on enhancing the professional competencies of future special educators by encouraging reflective reading, scientific thinking, and the creative use of art and drama as effective teaching tools. Both the theory and practicum components are thoughtfully integrated to ensure a strong connection between knowledge and practice, fostering confident, compassionate, and skilled special educators ready to serve in inclusive learning environments.

Established in 2002, Pope Paul Mercy Home Teachers Training College stands as the first Special Education Training Centre in Thrissur District. Functioning under the esteemed umbrella of Pope Paul Mercy Home, the college is committed to shaping compassionate, skilled, and professionally competent special educators. We have been conducting the Diploma in Special Education (Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities) since our inception, with recognition from the Rehabilitation Council of India (RCI) and the Government of Kerala

Course Content
The Diploma in Education – Special Education (Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities) is a comprehensive programme that combines theory, practice teaching, and practical training. It consists of five common courses and seven specialization courses focused on the education of children with Intellectual Disability (ID), Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), and Specific Learning Disability (SLD). The curriculum is thoughtfully designed so that the content related to these disabilities is spirally integrated across all courses, ensuring that trainee teachers gain both deep knowledge and practical competence. This approach prepares them to become skilled special educators capable of meeting diverse learning needs with empathy and expertise.
Upon successful completion, trainees are well-equipped to work in special schools, inclusive schools at the elementary level, early intervention and preschool settings, or to provide home-based education for children with high support needs. The programme also empowers them to engage confidently in online and blended teaching, widening their professional opportunities and impact in the field of special education.
Who can apply
- For D.Ed, 10 +2 or its equivalent examination from a recognized Central/ State Board of Education of Education with minimum 50% marks aggregate.

Continued Rehabilitation Education (CRE) Programs
The Continued Rehabilitation Education (CRE) programs are specialized training initiatives recognized by the Rehabilitation Council of India (RCI). These programs aim to enhance the professional competence of rehabilitation practitioners and educators working in the field of disability rehabilitation and special education.
Objectives
- To upgrade the knowledge and skills of in-service and practicing rehabilitation professionals registered with the RCI under Section 19 of the RCI Act, 1992.
- To update and strengthen the expertise of master trainers engaged in disability rehabilitation and special education.
Participation in CRE programs awards credit points that are mandatory for the renewal of RCI registration. The number of points earned depends on the duration and structure of each program.
Our Commitment
Pope Paul Mercy Home Teachers Training Centre is a recognized RCI-approved training institute dedicated to advancing professional excellence in the field of special education. We organize three CRE programs every academic year, typically spanning three to five days, focusing on current trends and best practices in special education and rehabilitation.

Eligibility
All RCI-certified professionals are eligible to participate in the CRE programs. Participants must submit a letter of permission from their employing institution, along with a valid RCI certificate and completed registration form.
Number of Seats
The number of seats is sanctioned by the RCI based on the program’s level (local, state, national, or international) and mode of delivery (online or offline).
